Ideally, the job and career that fit you and are aligned with who you truly are, should also provide you with pleasure, besides financial stability and security. According to The School of Life, there are 12 kinds of pleasure one can find in work. Some will matter more to you than others, but understanding your personal "pleasure points" can help you identify a career that feels truly fulfilling.

Here are the 12 pleasure points:

  1. Making Money: Gaining satisfaction from knowing your work is valuable and that the services you provide are worth what you're paid.

  2. Beauty: Taking joy in making things more beautiful.

  3. Creativity: Enjoying that your creativity and innovative ideas solve problems.

  4. Understanding: Finding pleasure in reflecting on and contributing to meaningful ideas and making sense of the world.

  5. Self-Expression: Loving opportunities to express yourself, whether through speaking, writing, art, or other forms.

  6. Technology: Being excited by how technology can solve problems and advance human development.

  7. Helping Others: Feeling fulfilled by knowing that your work contributes to assisting and supporting other people.

  8. Leading: Enjoying the responsibility and influence that comes with leading and guiding others.

  9. Teaching: Finding joy in transferring knowledge and explaining concepts to others.

  10. Independence: Preferring to work on your own rather than being part of a team.

  11. Order: Feeling satisfied when you can bring structure and organization to a situation.

  12. Nature: Feeling happy when you can work in or with nature.

Which of these pleasures resonate most with you?

Understanding your personal sources of joy at work is a key ingredient in discovering the kind of career that will truly fulfil you.
