When values lead the way

Last week, I had an insightful conversation with a client who wants to change his job. He is a senior communication expert who genuinely loves his work: diving into a topic, doing the research, organising information, and crafting a compelling story to raise awareness and educate the targeted audience.
But lately, he has lost his motivation. Why? Not because of the salary or the organisation’s mission — both of which he appreciates — but because he no longer has the creative freedom that once made his work meaningful. Senior management now controls the messaging, leaving little room for creativity or professional judgment.
Motivation is not always driven by a good salary, titles, or reputation, it is deeply connected to our values. To what truly matters to us. When our work no longer aligns with those values, even the best job can start to feel empty.
That is why, in my coaching, discussions about values and personal mission run like a red thread through every session — especially when clients are unhappy or considering a career change. Understanding what drives you, what sustains you in challenging times, and what you ultimately want to achieve gives you a compass for decisions and direction.
